North Oregon Coast February 2011

The wind was CRAZY! We walked out along the inner side of South Jetty. There was no way, in this wind, that we were going to be able to climb up and walk along the top.

Scout loves the wind! It was even difficult for her to stay upright while standing on the observation deck:

Dunes north of the jetty.

What's the story behind Flavel House?

  2. The wind is so awesome, I couldn't let go of my tripod because it kept trying to blow over. Even when we got down on the ground behind the jetty, it was still blowing my tripod over. Sand was blowign along the ground in sheets and got in our eyes. Waves hit the jetty so hard that spray was flying waaaayyyy out over the dunes and getting us all wet.

    FLAVEL HOUSE:
    Is in Astoria.
It was built by George Flavel who was a pilot at the mouth of the Columbia
and he pretty much is credited for the massive developments in Astoria. the
historical society accounts (as shared by descendents of the Flavels) Say
they were a beloved family who did and gave much to the community. Accounts
from descendents of locals say they were litigious jerks and everybody
    gave them a wide berth.
    ;o)

There is another house belonging within the Flavel family that is a few
blocks away on 15th and Franklin, (or 15th and Grant, I can't remember but
its o n15th in that same neighborhood as Flavel House) Anyway, it was owned
by George Flavels son Harry Sherman Flavel, aka "Hatchet Harry" who came
about this moniker because of an altercation he'd had with a neighbor. I am
not sure if he killed the man with the hatchet, or merely injured him, but
it sounds like Harry was a bit of a looney and after this episode he went
'on the lam' to avoid the law. The house passed to his sisters, one of whom
remains living - but old - and the house is in the custody of lawyers. They
will not relinquish it to buyers from the Oregon Historical Society for
various legal and financial reasons. Something about liens and crap for Debts
owed. So the house on 15th falls into diabolical disrepair and meanwhile the
interior/furnishings are supposedly as specatasular as the restored Flavel
    house.
